Ultra-running...two wheeled style.

So I've been thinking (which usually means I'm getting ready to spend assets in the form of either time, energy or money).  Years ago (high-school) I was really into ultra-marathon road cycle (as in bicycle) racing.  I was consumed by it.  I loved it.  The fact that I got into marathon/ultra running is, I think, a natural outgrowth from those years.  Anyway, I don't miss it much.  It really turned into something that I no longer enjoyed as costs skyrocketed, people got involved because they wanted to parade around with the most expensive bike at the event, and so on.  I also just sort of grew out of the sport, finding interests in other areas.  Lately I've begun really enjoying riding again.  Now though, as opposed to an ultra-light weight road kit, I love to beat around the same trails that I run on my mountain bike.  In fact, I find myself taking the long way home from work just so I can log a few miles on the trail upon my trusty mount (a rather mundane low-end Specialized hard-tail).  What a blast.  So this evening I happened over to the USA Cycling web site and found that others enjoy the same thing.  Imagine that. ;)  It seems that the mounted version of my much adored long/very-long distance trail running is actually quite popular all over the place (note that this is no the same as XC/Cross-Country MTB).  Me thinks I will have to give it a try.  Stand by for injury reports.
